Since 1945, the CPCU Society’s Los Angeles area Chapters have been a continual source of superior educational events, leadership development and professional affiliation for our members, the insurance industry and the general public. The CPCU designation not only represents high educational standards, it also reflects the highest standards of professionalism and ethics in our industry, virtues which are of the utmost importance to both the industry and the public we serve.

To our new CPCUs, we congratulate you on your achievement!  Remember that earning your designation is only the beginning of your journey.  We encourage you to become active in your local CPCU Chapter and take full advantage of the educational, leadership and networking opportunities such engagement provides. By passing the CPCU courses, you have developed your technical knowledge of insurance operations and products. By participating in your local CPCU chapter, you will continue to hone your industry knowledge and leadership skills

Below are some of the topic items:

Outlook for the P&C Industry--Trends and Challenges for 2016 and Beyond

Dr. Steve Weisbart, Chief Economist for the Insurance Information Institute, will discuss the current outlook and emerging trends for the U.S. and world economies and their potential impact on exposure, premium, and loss growth.  Dr. Weisbart will also explore recent trends in catastrophes, legal liability, and the tort environment and their implications on underwriting, pricing, growth, and insurer capacity.

Hiring Millennials

Born from approximately 1978 to 2000, the young people commonly referred to as “Millennials” have different expectations of the workplace.  These include greater job flexibility and better work-life balance, more rapid advancement, casual office environments, and salary transparency.  Our speakers will discuss the challenges and opportunities these expectations present for employers along with suggestions for how to make the industry more attractive for the next generation of insurance professionals.

Employment Practices Mock Trial

Allegations of harassment, discrimination, and failure to pay wages due employees make the news almost every day.  In this session, George Wallace, partner at the firm of Wallace-Schwartz, will facilitate a mock trial of a typical employment practices lawsuit, from testimony, to jury deliberations, to the final verdict.  To add realism to the session, twelve participants will be chosen to serve as the jury deciding the outcome of this case.

Insurance Employment Panel

Dr. David Russell, Professor of Insurance and Finance at California State University, Northridge, will moderate a panel of insurance and HR experts on issues facing the industry in attracting and retaining top talent at all levels.  The panel will discuss current insurance labor market conditions and multiple techniques for accessing the best talent in the most efficient way.

Guest Speaker: Leadership

We’re honored to have Los Angeles native Captain Mark Cedrun (Ret.) as our keynote speaker.  Mr. Cedrun has over 20 years in the U.S. Navy which included command of the rescue mission of Captain Richard Phillips from pirates in 2009. This event was later made into a 2013 Oscar nominated blockbuster film starring Tom Hanks. Captain Cedrun is a graduate of the US Naval Academy, has a Master of Arts in National Security and Strategic Studies, as well as a Master of Science in Aeronautical Engineering. Captain Cedrun also has been given numerous awards including the Defense Superior Service Medal, the Legion of Merit (four awards), the Bronze Star Medal, the Meritorious Service Medal (five awards), the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (four awards), the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal and is authorized to wear numerous campaign and unit awards.

All insurance minded people are welcome to attend... You need not be a CPCU!
