Do you want to know more about the insurance industry or risk management, make progress towards an insurance designation, earn CE credits, or network with colleagues and fellow insurance professionals? If any of these opportunities interest you, consider enrolling in a class for the fall semester.
Among offerings in the Southern California area:
- ARM 55, Risk Assessment and Treatment, Mondays 9/10-12/3, 5:30 PM at Lockton, 725 S. Figueroa Street, 35th Floor
- CPCU 552, Commercial Liability, Tuesdays 9/4-12/4, 5:30 PM at HUB in Culver City
- CPCU 530, Business Law, Wednesdays 9/5-12/5, 5:30 PM in Marsh’s training room, 633 W. 5th Street, 12th floor
- CPCU 555, Personal Insurance, Thursdays 9/6-12/6, 5:00 PM at Farmers in Woodland Hills
Note that neither ARM nor CPCU courses need to be taken in order, so if you want to jump into the ARM program with 55, or take any of the CPCU courses, that’s not a problem.
If you would like to register for any of these courses, sign up at the IEA website
(Sign up by September 1 and use code IEAFA18WB for an early bird discount!) Please obtain your manager’s approval before signing up for a class. Remember that the cost of the class is part of the total; you also need to sign up for the national exam and purchase textbooks which are available electronically or in printed form. The classes are approved for CE credit, you need to pass the national exam in order to earn credit towards a designation. Register for the exam and buy course materials at http://www.theinstitutes.org/
If you’d like to take a class that is not being offered this semester, please let the IEA know which class you’re looking for and where you’d like to take it.
If you are in need of CE credit rather urgently, the Surplus Lines Association offers free courses every month or two in the Los Angeles area. The next is Tuesday, August 21st, in Universal City, and the topic is immigration issues and liability exposures. You need to sign up 5 days in advance so if you want to take that sign up now! There are also classes in Universal City on project policies on Tuesday October 23 and emerging trends on Tuesday November 13. Most of the SLA courses are approved for 3 CE credits. November 6 is the LA County All-Industry Day in Studio City which has several seminars submitted for CE credit, we’ll be sending out registration instructions in the next month or so. If you’re looking for ethics credit, The Institutes has an online ethics course that is approved for 6 hours of ethics CE (CPCU 312, Ethics and the CPCU Code of Professional Conduct), it’s a 50 question multiple choice quiz and the cost is $5.50 for the certificate.
If you have any questions regarding CPCU or ARM classes, please let me know. (Full disclosure: I’m leading all four of these classes.) If you took an exam some time ago and would like to restart your insurance learning, I recommend you call the Institutes at (800)644-2101 or visit their website to see what credits you have on file and what they suggest you take next. There are some interesting new offerings and multiple ways to prepare for an exam.
And for those who have earned their designations, especially your CPCU, congratulations – and please pay your 2018 CPCU dues if you haven’t already. Your chapter thanks you! If you aren’t getting chapter mailings, please let me know so we can make sure you’re invited to 2018 events.
